Beat Procrastination!

Spring fever has hit here in Washington, DC and with every degree the temperature inches closer to 75, the more procrastination can hit an all time high.  Here are 5 tips on how to prevent procrastination:

  1. Use the buddy system: Big project or paper you have been avoiding starting?  Find a buddy (friend, sibling or parent) and schedule a working session (in person or virtual) to help you push past the barrier of getting started.

  2. Clarify instructions: One of the biggest reasons we procrastinate is because we don’t know where to start.  Adding in 5 to 10 minutes at the beginning of an assignment to read through the instructions and make a plan could save you hours of procrastination time on the back end.

  3. Start small:  Sometimes the reason we procrastinate is because the task can feel overwhelming.  Starting with a small task like reviewing your notes, making your to-do list or completing a class exit ticket can help spark the motivation to get you started!

  4. Disconnect: Remove any distractions before you get started! Put your phone away, turn on any website blockers (like Self- Control) to help minimize distractions.

  5. Treat yo’ self: Setting small goals and rewards can be the motivation needed to help you stop procrastinating. Set small goals for yourself as you work and after completing an assignment or some studying reward yourself by going outside to enjoy spring!
