Overcoming Test Anxiety: Just in time for AP Exams!

Taking Advanced Placement (AP) Exams can be an overwhelming process, especially if you are juggling multiple AP classes. But don’t worry, it’s normal to feel a bit anxious – here are some ways you can help alleviate test anxiety:

Do the Prep Work

Make sure you know what you’re getting into, so you can go into the test as prepared as possible. Check the College Board website for exam-specific information. Use resources like the AP Exam Youtube Channel and our Exam Prep Guide to create a study plan ahead of time.

Monitor Self Talk

If the test is difficult, it’s easy to fall into a spiral of negative thinking. If this happens, practice noticing your negative thoughts so you can substitute positive ones. For example, instead of “I should have studied more” tell yourself “I prepared the best that I could, and I will do my best on this exam.”

Relax & Re-focus

If you notice yourself feeling anxious, intentionally pause and take a deep breath. Close your eyes for a second. Tense and relax your muscles. Remember to take your time, re-focus and start again.
