Taking Executive Function Outside the Classroom
Executive functioning expands beyond the classroom, and for many students the best way to continue to develop and adapt their executive function skills is through workforce development opportunities. Whether that’s an internship, volunteering, a gap year program or job shadowing– these experiences all provide essential opportunities for students to use their strategies and systems beyond their classrooms.
For students, the ability to practice and regulate their behaviors, self monitor and self control in real time are the best foundational practices for growing their flexibility and resilience–both of which we know to be foundational skills in a person’s overall development of their executive function. The other added benefit of these experiences is that without the parameters of the traditional classroom, students can use their executive function in a new environment and begin to develop a deeper, more holistic understanding of themselves. As your student begins to seek out these experiences, the best place to start discussing and implementing this executive function support is during the pre-planning and application process–don’t worry we can help with that too!
